Autism Assistance dogs - I need advice!

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone could help. My psychiatrist has suggested I get an assistance dog as I am currently unable to leave the house until my mum comes home from a full day of work or I can go with my dogs.

I have ADHD autism and mixed anxiety depressive disorder and honestly feel like a prisoner of my own house. I have looked into ADUK and other charities but they all have full waiting lists or cost a minimum of around £15,000 which is just money I don't have being 18 and starting university in September which is a whole other issue.

I currently have a Shih Tzu she is 2 years old but struggles with normal training (could be the techniques we have used so far) but has anyone got any advice of what to do or if they know anyone that could help. I live in South Wales but am happy to travel for the right help as I also have relatives in Surrey.

I would love to know about this too - I feel like an assistance dog would be a massive benefit to my life but it's hard to know where to start.

What does your psychiatrist suggested the dog assist with? Is it a companion dog or do you need it to help you with specific tasks?

Also - for the training of your current dog, were you using training guides when doing the training of the dog?

Dogs need consistency in their training so everyone in the house has to follow the same rules in treating the dog othewise it will follow the path of least resistance and can undo any hard work you put in.

ADHD can be challenging when trying such a patience based approach.
