Autism and PMT

Hi sorry this is a bit sensitive but I am suffering from really bad PMT my boyfriend is suffering because of it. We both have autism. Right now my mood swings are really bad one minute we can be having a laugh and a joke then the next I’m giving him a hard time and I get angry and upset and it’s driving him up the wall. My boyfriend been really ill these last few weeks and has spent over 3 weeks in hospital 2 of those weeks he been in ICU. I’m really worried I’m going to make him ill again or we end up breaking up. I’m asking does anyone else suffer from bad PMT and how do you deal with it because ause I’m at breaking point here.

  • Are you familiar with PMDD at all? It might be worth considering whether you have it if your PMT is so bad that it's affecting your relationship.

Hormonal contraceptives can help, as they stop you from having a proper menstrual cycle and that means your hormones aren't all over the place any more. There are other options for treatment as well, if those don't work for you or you'd prefer not to take them. I'm currently on the progesterone-only pill for a different medical condition and I've definitely noticed that I've stopped having a huge peak in anxiety every few weeks now that I don't have a period any more, though my issues don't quite rise to the level of PMDD, so I imagine the effect would be even more significant if you do give it a try.
