Help with food

Hi, I need some advice about my 10yr old son who has ASD & ADHD.

He has major problems with food: taste, texture, colour & smells.  He has a very poor diet & is getting seriously underweight aswell as being underheight.  He is on medication & they changed it 6 mths ago due to appetite suppressing.

I cant get him to try anything new, or a lot of the old food he used to eat. He doesnt eat sweets or chocolate, well only as a treat after he has ate a fair bit.

The Dr at CAMHS suggested that I put something on here & I may be able to get some advice & help from others that are in the same situation.

He has always been a very fussy eater but its getting worse.  I have been asking for help from proffessionals for a while now but its only this last 6 mths that they have realised that hes not putting on weight or gaining any height that they are getting worried & are talking about hospitals etc & that would completely freak him out.

Thanks :)

  • Ask your son outright what he likes, then try giving him other foods that look as much like those things as possible or incorporate bits of them, along with the foods he states he likes.

If he doesn't like vegetables, liquidise them into pasta sauces etc.

As a short-term measure you could give him some Complan or similar to build him up a bit.

Get him involved in helping make the food as it will inspire him and make him want to try it.  Look at cookery books with him, ask him to suggest recipes you can make together.

Take the pressure off, as he will feel the pressure and it is likely to make him worse.  Aks him what he wants and what he thinks might help.

Make food into the shape of something he likes such as dinosaurs or cars etc.

Also, grow some vegetables together, make him responsible for watering them.  It can even be done in a window box if you don't have a garden.
