Hospital Records Query

Recently, I wrote to my local Health Board, requesting records of hospital stays etc. I can hardly remember a thing about these, for some reason. I had this response yesterday:

It's definitely the right Board that I wrote to, by the way. Does anybody know what I should do next, if anything?

  • I’ve been trying to access my own actual records (not just hearsay and verbal accounts from family and friends) from the HSE (formerly the Eastern Health Board) in Ireland regarding my childhood stay for 9 months in the Warrenstown House Residential facility during my time in primary school back in the late 1970’s - early 1980’s - given the Irish culture of secrecy (surely they, although a state run institution, would have learned lessons from the abuse scandals in the Catholic Church, such as in the Magdalene Laundries, etc) there is an assumption that I “don’t need to know” and thier use of euphemistic language is incredibly frustrating - but what I’m finding is the HSE are hiding behind Irish data protection laws and GDPR rules to avoid giving me access to my own records - I simply want to see my own records in order to better understand my autism diagnosis and how it presented itself in childhood, yet those I’ve contacted in the HSE via email simply will not Co-operate - it’s well known that a lot of corruption for decades long is going on in the Irish state bodies like the HSE including over Covid, as Gemma O’ Doherty has exposed, but until now I had not realised just how bad it was

  • If it’s appears that they are trying to fob you off, request ‘Subject Access’ formally (for the specific information you are requesting), they they’ll charge admin and send you what you want in about a month.
I had a similar problem trying to access educational records, so a bore down on them with a Subject Access’ for any and all information that I am the subject of, then £40 and 40 days later it magically appeared..:D

  • The NHS is very split, there are hospital Trusts and community Trusts, mental health trusts just for a start it is possible you wrote to the wrong place. But as mentioned it will depend on how old the information you are looking for is as well. You can pretty much forget being able to get hold of anything from the 90s or earlier (I have tried) More recently will be easier as more has been stored online over the past 10 years
