New term, new teacher, new year. its making my boy ill.

Since the return to school my 7year old son is struggling. Early hours Thurs night he was in extreme pain with rectum spasms, this lasted 3.5 hrs. He could'nt go to school fri. Over the weekend we have caught two episodes of the spasms early, gave him his anti-spasm med, lots of cuddles and reassurance.

I am dreading school for him tomo. I am feeling so helpfless Frown

  • Hi Chystal12

No diagnoses yet. Waiting for the assessment. Senco is incompetent. Waiting for a meeting with headteacher to make a complaint. I am trying to hold down my anxieties as they r through the roof.

    Another day another challenge. Undecided

  • Hi - I'm presuming your son has a diagnosis of autism and a statement of educational needs so he can get the support he needs at school.  Things must be really bad if he's having these spasms for so long.  Do you think the school is doing all it can to help him?Mainstream can be very stressful for our children, as you know from your own experience.  I hope things work out so that his anxiety levels subside a bit if the school can help him more.  If not?

  • Hi Openheart

Its not that  i don't want him to go to school, quite the opposite, he's a smart kid and he has bright future.. I just know how challenging the school environment is for him. He is not fully able to put his worries into context at 7, maybe as he gets a bit older and has more understanding he will be able to talk through them.

But anxiety defo seems the key factor. I have ordered some books, i need knowledge and talking to anyone who shed light on this is more than helpful  :)

  • Hi Hope,

Its sounds very similar except when my son has a full blown episode it last acout 3.5 hrs. But i will put this  to the next consultant next month.

School defo makes my son anxious. Also makes our whole family axious. I think we all try not to let this be known to my son but he probably does. My sons experience of his first school was horrendous. I changed his school when he was 5 after they pysically restsined him. He is doing a lot better at new school. But i think school sends him into hypersensitivy.

I am looking into sensory aids to help with this.

    Thanks :)

  • Could he have proctalgia fugax?

I have had periodic rectal spasms since I was about 10 years old. They tend to occur prior to menstruation, but can occur at other times, with no warning. The pain in the bum is excruciating while it lasts, but is gone after 10 seconds or so. I can go for months without a bout, but other times they occur more frequently.

The spasms are usually caused by anxiety.

    • I read that ANXIETY is caused by an outcome or possible dreaded outcome you "don't want to happen".

Reading your post under the context of the above definition,, quote "I am dreading school for him tomo.", that is the problem then for you(you don't wish him to go to school), but regarding your son what is the outcome or possible outcome bringing him his anxiety,, the outcome of going to school generally, the new unknown teacher, the classroom environment stimulas, your stress transferred onto him, spasms or just his autism kicking in ? It could be anything ?  I think you need to identify the outcome or possible outcome problem and  try and change it at source outcome. What is the outcome force stopping him ?

    Hope this helps
