Black lines on nails

I've noticed on some of my toe and fingernails I've got thin black lines. No pain or anything but they're definitely there. I wondered if I'd hit them and caused bruising or bleeding but I don't think I have and it's unlikely I'd have it on my toe and fingernails.

Does anyone here know what this could be? I'm wondering if it's vitamin related. Maybe I need more dairy in my diet?

If you think it's more serious and might need further investigation then I'll call the doctors but my anxiety is so bad I can hardly leave the house. So doctors are a last resort. If anyone knows what these black lines are your Insight is welcome and thanks:)

  • I had this about 3 years ago and it was iron deficiency. I was pale as well but I thought that was just because I was a ghost GhostYum

  • Could be iron deficiency. I’m no Doctor mind you! I get vertical white lines sometimes and When doctors notice (not because I’ve brought it up, they just like to examine nails I think!) they tend to suggest I get tested for iron levels though they’ve generally been ok.

one think I’ve noticed is that my thumb nails are like seismographs for stress and inflammation. I had pericarditis a few years back and for months afterwards my thumbnails had pronounced ridges that took months to grow out. They seem ok for now! No scurvy imminent it seems.
