Advice re. my daugher

Hi

I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on my daughter. She is 8 years old and I wonder if she has mild aspergers. She is home educated after struggling badly in school (bullied, can't cope with classroom noise, verbal instructions, peers). I am her mother and my instinct tells me something isn't right. She isn't interested in friends however will play 1-1 with people but can't cope in large groups (the social dynamics stress her out too much).

She just likes being on her own, she has interests in cars, vehicles and motoring programmes. She collects barbies but not to play with just to dress up. Her motor skills and sense of direction are very poor. She struggles with keys and doors.

She is a very clever girl and did well in her SATS (2A/3s) prior to me taking her out, but she won't read a book. I think she may have mild dyslexia as she reverses words/letters but manages to hide it a lot.

Something just doesn't seem right to me. I am concerned and wonder if I should be seeking extra support from someone. The other problem is she is hypersensitive to touch, she is ok with me/family but not peers. She gets upset when people crowd her or pull at her to play. She won't look someone in the eye until she knows them well, often talking to them through me. This wasn't too bad when she was younger but now it appeards strange to people.

She has had panic attacks when in busy supermarkets, to a point I have had to take her out.

If someone could give me some advice I would appreciate it so much as I feel very lost and alone at the moment.

Many thanks

She will be entitled to all the same things any other ASC child would, except a statement of special educational needs as this only applies to school. You can apply for DLA and Carer's allowance too, even before a diagnosis, although more likely to get it with a diagnosis.

I would definatly echo going for a Statement as it may not only help now but to 25, one nice thing about the government's reforms *cough* money saving tactics *cough*

Again the charity IPSEA can help on this too, plus a charity called SOSEN http://www.sossen.org.uk/

You would need to get with GPs, any other professionals that may help like NHS Children and Adolscent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) etc.

I would also defo echo Intenseworld's comment about child DLA (I think their form is on the Gov.uk website) From here, if your child gets atleast Middle Rate Care then you can apply for Carer's Allowance (as long as you don't earn over £100 after National Insurance, Income Tax etc)

    Hope that helps.
