I've noticed for quite a while that there is real discontent by the lack of provision from NAS and like.

I thought this charity I have come across, based in Northampton, may be useful for someone on here. It is also looking from around the end of this year to start offering an adults' diagnostic serivce provided by an experianced GP

They also offer other services (e.g. counsellors) and family services etc.

 

I know this won't solve everything but hope it goes some way to help someone in need.

  • I spoke to Elaine about all of this as I didn't want to give out incorrect information about her husband so this is what she had to say about it;

    Geoff has undertaken a course of study with Fiona Scott in Cambridge in the ADI-R method (and is shortly doing the ADOS also). As for assessments, they should only be done by people with appropriate qualifications in autism, like a Masters in Autism for instance.  

    A client of mine said that some Mums were saying that only a diagnosis done at a Hospital and under the NHS is acceptable.  I wrote to professor Simon Baron-Cohen who is at the very top of clinicians in the field of autism (he's also a colleague) and you will read what he said. Also in addition, the NAS hold a database of approved counsellors and diagnosticians and these people have to prove beyond reasonable doubt that they have successfully undertaken a course in autism etc. You will find both mine and Geoff's on that database.

    "Hi Simon.  Could you advise me please? Some Mums have it in their heads that if you get a diagnosis for autism outside of the nhs the nhs won't recognise it. "

    "Dear Elaine,

     Professor Baron-Cohen has passed your email to me and asked me to reply on his behalf.

     He has said that he can reassure you that this is incorrect information. I hope this helps."

    So as you can see Dr Nicholson is more than qualified and studied under  a former research associate of the autism research centre. And word from a man who is supposed to be an expert in this field who confirms that a diagnosis outside of the NHS will in fact be recognized. I hope that clears everything up.
