Employment for Autistic people and DWP

Hi there

I'm George, a recently diagnosed autistic individual. I had had a rough time with DWP as they don't seem to be supporting me in finding a appropriate job for someone with my needs. They would like me to get any job, but I say that I may not be successful in that role due to the disorder. Has anyone else had similar problems? And are there any Autism friendly employers that I should be focusing on?

    I'm reired now and so glad to be out of the rat race, I use to dread having to go and 'sign-on'. I know what you mean about almost forced into jobs, just so they could get their numbers down.

    When i was younger i always worked in offices and studied accountancy, but never really liked it. I felt different then, many years before i'd even heard of autism.  Then after being made redundant, fell into a temporary job driving a taxi. It lasted over 30yrs, although i was meeting lots more people than in the office, they were all just passing through, you weren't expected to join their group, you worked alone. So even then long before i knew about autism, it must have been there.

  • Government Jobs always suck the life out of you. I worked for DWP in 2004; only lasted six months, I was a mess.

    However, it turned out to be the greatest blessing I ever received.

  • DWP are not very understanding of autism at all in my experience. They just treat you as an NT person and expect you to just "get a job". There is no different way of treating people who are autistic
