Telling your child about their diagnosis

I just wondered what others think about telling their child about their diagnosis and what's the best to do it.

My son was diagnosed with aspergers in July, he's been asking why he's different for a while. We haven't told him yet as I'm not sure what's the best way to go about it. i want him to see it as a positive not negative. also I don't wanting him using it as an excuse.

The clinical psychologist has said they would sit down with him either whilst I tell him and explain in a bit more detail.

How much should we tell him. i'm only just begining to get my head around it.

Thanks for any advice.

  • Hi - there are books/info you can get so I wd check out this home pg + also the nas home pg.  My thoughts are "easy does it" with whatever you say to him.  Without knowing him it can be difficult to judge how much he can take in at one time or how he will react.  It's a lot to take in for all concerned so a bit of homework 1st, rather than relying on the professionals at this stage cd poss be a gd idea.  I'm sure others will be along to give useful advice. Gd luck with everything - remember, you don't have to rush anything but he's obviously wanting answers so at the same time you cannot take as much time as you may have wished to to get your head around things 1st.  Gd luck with everything.
