Early diagnosis.

My son is nearly 3 and we are extemley concerned about his behaviour. The main concern is his aggression but he also displays some other concerning behaviour, such as; Not wanting to eat solid food (only wants to drink hot chocolate), his speech has regressed to the point he dosen't even ask for things just points or takes me to the item, he finds interacting with other children very difficult as he dosen't really understand the concept of 'playing', he is obssessed with toy cars and constantly lines them up, he has no spacial awarness at all, dosen't hear me when I talk to him and cannot follow even the simplest of instructions. We have taken him to the doctors and we were told we weren't paying him enough attention and in any case he would not be assesed until he was at least 4!! I am really struggling as his behaviour is so bad and I am at home with him and my 7 month old 5 days a week. I have 2 autistic siblings so I have a goood insight into autism and what behaviours are signs of autism. I just feel like we are alone and being blamed for Daniels behaviour. I was wondering if anybody has managed to get an early diagnosis and how? My brother was diagnosed at 6 but my sister was not diagnosed until she was 18 and now suffers from mental health issues as well, I really do not want this to happen to my son but feel like thre is no help available!! :(

  • Hi, it's so sad to hear your doctor was of no help. I had a similar experience with my GP. I asked if he had any expereince with autism and he didn't have a clue.

Do you have a local sure start childrens centre nearby? I've had a really good experience at mine. The outreach worker in the childrens centre refered my son to the local child development centre were he's had the ados assesment and next month i'm having the ADI (autism diagnostic interview).  If there is no child development centre in your area, ask if there is a developmental advisory clinic. If the childrens centre doesn't help go back to the GP and demand a referal to a peadiatrician who speaialises in diagnosing autism.

    Hope this helps. x

  • Thankyou joshuasmammy,we have just moved boruoghs as well so he doesn't have a health visitor at the moment!!! I don't think they will give him speech therapy as his speech is not bad enough!! He will be going to nursery in September and we just keep getting told that he will settle down then and its just his age!! We don't have much support from our families either they just say its his age as well but no one sees him everyday like we do. I think its so bad that the doctor offered me no advice or anything when I told her I was finding it hard to cope and it offten causes arguments with me and my partner as we can disagree on how to deal with Dan Dan. I really hope someone can help soon, I would just like an actual diagnosis so we can get some proper help in dealing with his behaviour :( Thanks again x

  • hi there, so sorry to hear your having such a hard time:( i know exactly how your feeling i was in the same situation as you a few years ago, a new baby and my ds was not eating not talking he had severe tantrums all due to sensory issues from the impact of asd which had never heard of until my ds started going to speech therapy! he has been diagnosed this year at 4 years old. but we did get help last 2 years with Opt ,SLT,Ed and he was placed in diagnostic nursery for a year . Have you tried any other ways would your health visitor not refer him to speech therapy ? or maybe even a nursery setting were he could be taught other ways of communicating like visual boards ,makaton anything to help him express himself its frustrating for him im sure :( The help would make all the difference for you and most importantly your little boy.I really hope you can get a reply that maybe would point you other directions too!!  for me the health visitor referred my ds to speech therapy and then they referred him to doctor and then autism clinic.

hope you get loads of replys to help you!! dont give up hope you will find a way through this and your little boy will get the help he needs, best wishes for you and your family:)
