Eating

Hi I'm gem and today my beautiful son Jacob was diagnosed with autism, the 1 question I have at this time is about diet! My son has a very selective diet and doesn't try new things anyone out there who has the same problem or has been through it and has some advice? X

  • Gem there is a lot of books and autistic information on the subject of selective eating, there is lots of different strategies available. Introducing new food, a balanced diet and eating in different places associated with a function, ie hot dog at the park, chicken at KFC, pizza at pizza hut, popcorn at the cinema.

I think ,I would strongly recommend you speak to your autism professional on this one.

  • Hi - how selective is his diet?  As long as he's getting enough to stop being hungry + isn't lacking in any vitamins etc or getting thin then try not to worry too much.  Sometimes making an issue of it can make it worse, altho I understand your concern. There are a number of posts here about food issues so have a look.  You can put a tiny piece of a different food on a separate plate near to his meal or even further away, without comment.  If he ignores it, so be it.  On the other hand he might try it at some point.  Keep doing it, don't give up after a few tries, these things can take time.  Do you know if he eats different foods at different places he goes to?  My son did + it was only by a passing comment that I found out!
