GP Trying To "cure" Me

Hi, I'm Angel, joined here today and was diagnosed as a teenager. I have a few other problems alongside my autism and one of them is my stomach which also ties in with digestion. I'm used to having pain in my stomach and feeling sick daily now but a new one is getting pain and feeling sick when in the car, which is new for me I used to travel really well. I have fears of medical places, people and tests but finally built up the courage to go and see the GP. She's wanting me to have tests but also to go on different medications because she's almost certain it will improve my autism and I almost get the feeling she's trying to cure me. She hasn't said so but I get that feeling.

A few years ago I was involved in MH services because I had an imaginary friend and suddenly I'm involved with MH because the GP thinks I've got psychosis and worst they agreed! I went through years of gruelling and stressful times and the result was burnout and severe anxiety. Eventually I got out of the service but it took a long time and I had to tell them my imaginary friend is gone... She isn't but I got the feeling if I didn't tell them then they wouldn't leave me alone.

People keep trying to cure me and keep labelling me with different things. It's horrible and I'm annoyed with the GP and MH services. I write down exactly how I'm feeling and what I think but everyone ignores it and tells me what they think. It's so annoying.

I just want to be understood and listened to.

This is difficult and none of us are qualified to make definitive pronouncements on MH. But a few things to consider...

On the one hand people who are genuinely psychotic often lack insight into the fact that they are ill. However, as a Spirtualist, I believe there are other possible explanations for so-called "imaginary" friends, and I'd wouldn't close my mind to the possibility your friend is very real indeed, albeit I can't know which is the case for sure for you.

Now, what is it that your GP is really trying to medicate and with what? I'd ask them to be really clear about that and even write it down. What are they prescribing and why? NICE guidelines make it really clear that the core features of autism should NEVER be medicated. There are no medications for autism. There just is NOTHING in a bottle that will "help" your autism. They may try to medicate MH problems, but sometimes the ones used for NTs aren't any good for our neurologies.

Your GP certainly needs to get a grip on the fact that whilst your digestive issues warrant  investigation and "curing", your autism does not.

I sympathise with the medical anxieties - Big time. I have those too. But they are likely born of your sensory issues and general medical people can and should try to modify how they treat you and the environment to make those tests as easy on you as they can in the circumstances. If they aren't doing that you could ask for an advocate. Mind or google will tell you which organisation serves your area. It's free and they can go to appointments with you, communicate for you and try to ensure that they do make reasonable adjustments for you.
