EMDR - has anyone tried it and found it helpful

Hello everyone,

I’m considering trying to access EMDR to help me deal with a traumatic experience/PTSD.
Has anyone tried EMDR - what was it like and did you find it helpful?

i can’t seem to get any therapy on the NHS (at least not without waiting for over a year) - I can’t really afford to pay privately but might have to as I really need help. I don’t want to waste what little money I have on EMDR if it’s not likely to help.

has anyone had a good experience with EMDR?
thanks

  • There's a helpful video posted here about an autistic experience of EMDR  https://community.autism.org.uk/f/adults-on-the-autistic-spectrum/28396/emdr

I too am considering if this might be helpful for me. I have been experiencing sensory trauma which has resulted in a specific phobia.

The website of my local IAPT service suggests that they offer EMDR for PTSD. Even though I do not have a formal PTSD diagnosis I might try self referring and see what happens.

As in your case I expect that the waiting list will be very long even if they do accept my referral, over a year minimum. Last time I was referred to IAPT that's how long it was and the CBT therapy offered was ineffective.
