My son has been diagnosed!

Hi all, my son (aged 3) was diagnosed yesterday as being on the ASD spectrum. He has Aspergers, we've suspected for quite a while and are so relieved that the drs are finally seeing what we see everyday. They're sending out all their referrals to different places but is there anything we need to do? Any help would be useful, thanks.

  • I have a son who is just about to turn 2 and has just been diagnosed with ASD. I was advised by the consultant to get hold of a book called More Than Words by Fern Sussman(It's about £33). It has lots of ideas to use with your child to help. The reviews from parents that have used the book are all glowing. I have had to order through the Telegraph web site as it was the only place that had expected stock.

We have also started to use PECS (pictorial exchange card system) to help with his communication with guidelines given to us from the consultant and in a very short time he is now starting to respond to the picture clues (even giving me the picture of his sister when its time to get her from school which is a big step forward from screaming!). We have also been told to sing to him (much to my partners dismay as he cant sing in tune for love nor money!) especially repetative songs or rhymes especially if they have actions so that he is used to the pattern and more likely to respond if you stop just before the action.

But the best advise I can give is 'go with it' try not to over stress and enjoy every day with your sometimes challenging but always fabulous little boy! because no two days will be the same.xxx
