From the start...

Hi all,

I have been under doctors/counsellors for a while now as they believed I was suffering with possible anxiety issues til the doctor told me a few weeks ago that I am possibly on the Autistic Spectrum. He then tried to refer me straight to Psychiatry, but they refused the referral and said I need to see counsellors first (I'd stopped seeing them for a few months as I was getting nowhere.) Anyways, I have now been referred to a counsellor again and get things moving from there.

I just wondered if there is anyone else out there who is in a similar position to me. I am 18 years old and have been struggling with possible Autism/Aspergers for as long as I can remember and for ages I have been pretty sure I've got it.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi

Sadly, from what I have read and from my own experience, it seems to be very common for someone to go through a variety of diagnoses before the getting the correct one.

My own GP sent me for counselling, three sessions - now fifteen years later I have just been given an Asperger's diagnosis.  Looking back, the symptoms I initially went to him with were Aspergers, though I didn't know it then.

As you say, the counselling should get things moving....  Good luck with that.
