Gut Health and Depression and Anxiety

I have just read a chapter on gut health in Prof Tim Spector's new book Spoon Fed (which is full of eye opening information).  Current consensus is that there is a big link between gut health and mental health with the gut being responsible for the production or serotonin and other mood related chemicals that the body produces.  The book does briefly mention autism because many with ASD also have IBS and other related issues.  As ever this is not true for everyone but if we all sorted out gut out a bit more then there would be less depression and anxiety and we would need a lot fewer drugs.

  • Is the world this face paced non human-friendly environment? How different is it from when we sat in tribes around a fire. What sort of Power Systems built the world we have today and at who's expense.

If you're not anxious and depressed you're either 5, in a bubble or incredibly wealthy. And while sure, gut health is important and why aren't we more concerned with biological health, with nuances in genetics (not everyone white is WHITE), with complexities in food sources? Why allow pesticides on the market which kill bees or allow depletion of nutrition from soil? Why are nutritionists still hung up on the groupings of food when they totally go against botany?? A peanut is not a nut. Why are all olive oils in the US being replaced with soya oils when legumes can cause digestive problems while olives are proven not to. Why is rapeseed oil the choice of the UK for replacement when it's a cover crop for glutenous food source which a percent of the world is missing the enzyme to break down that protein in there DNA?

There is a cocktail of complexities. I tread lightly around those who believe in one simple answer.
