Who to see for 6 year old with possible Aspergers?

Last year my *then* 5 year old, was seen by a team from the local childrens mental health service who did an aspergers assessment on him. Their feedback was that he had anxiety caused by my postnatal depression and the solution was for me not to be depressed, excusing the fact I've been on medication for 4 years and during that time havent suffered with depression I was not happy to say the least.

Things have carried on in the same way they were. All the same signs are there. The family history on his fathers side. The obsessions, the memory, the need for routine, the meltdowns over everything, unable to make decisions and many other things.

He will no longer leave the house on weekends without having a 2 hour meltdown first. I've realised we need help. I've got an appointment with the GP but thats 31 days away. I keep trying to grab the school SENCO but who can I ask her to refer us too?

Help. PLEASE!

  • My son's class teacher started the ball rolling for getting my son officially assessed. She had to do lots of observations and reports on his behaviour before the Educational Psychologist would come but she persevered. Your GP can also arrange a referral to CAMHS for you however, I didn't find them particularly helpful!

Don't despair, help is available. Do you have a local council run carers support facility. My one, Spelthorne Carers Support were fantastic!

Keep plugging away, my son was assessed in year 2, is now in year 6 and although we have some rough patches we have more good times than bad now.

    Take care

  • Hi there,

I was told by my sons school SENCO (the headmistress) that either she or my sons GP or the school nurse could get things started for a autism/Asperger assesment.

    good luck
