Over Eating

Hi all,

I am new to the discussions group.  Just wondering if anyone suffers from overeating/binge eating or just a bad relationship with food.

Long story short.  I have had eating issues from the age of 15 (I am now 46) diagnosed with Asperger's In January of this year and just cannot get to a place where i am happy with my eating.  I eat when i am happy, sad, stressed you name it i eat.  I have been under various therapists for my eating and can go 12 - 18 months at a time where my eating is really good but then i fall off the wagon and go back to my old habbits.  I have even tried Over Eaters Anonymous!!

Any advice, tips on how an Aspie can just be at peace with food.

thanks in advance

  • Hello, Dawn. Yes, I have a problem with overeating and binge eating. At the moment it is ice cream. I'm eating half a 2L tub a day. If I like a food, I eat it all the time for a month or so and then switch to another food. It's usually very quick and easy food, like Ice Cream, which requires little to no prep, and which has a texture I like. And because I don't stick to regular meals (and often have to remember to eat something) it's always a case of the eating a lot of food that I know I will enjoy and eating it all at once and not always knowing when to stop. Someone said that poor eating habits are a feature of autism. I have no advice, sorry, on the matter as I'm struggling with it myself and have gained over 3 st. since the start of the pandemic.  I've shot up from 14 st. to just over 17st. And my fitness levels have taken a major hit. I hate excess body fat, and the mere thought of it sends me into a spiralling depression. I can't bare to look at myself naked when I'm overweight. I find body fat really repulsive.

  • Hi Tassimo. Thank you for your reply and please do not apologise that you have no advice. I can relate to everything you have said. I think about food 24/7 and have to prepare daily meals for 2 young children and a partner!!! I have been able to loose three stone in the last year but have found my eating habits have gone erratic just lately and I don't want to put it all back on. I am just curious if I should seek help from someone who understands about eating and autism as all my previous therapists treated me pre my diagnosis. Just wondering if there is a different approach ( hope this makes sense) x
