Sensory problems - teeth cleaning

Hi,

I am looking for any advice for my 19 year old son.

Something that has become a huge hurdle in my son's life is cleaning his teeth. He produces a lot of phlegm. As soon as he starts to clean his teeth he starts to heave, gag and then this often results in him vomiting.

I have brought Oranurse toothpaste for him which is better than 'normal' toothpaste but it hasn't helped really with his problems. It now becomes a twice daily ritual which is causing him such distress and anxiety.

I would appreciate any advice if anyone has experienced this too.

Many, many thanks,

Sharon

  • I don't have issues brushing myself.

I use a water flosser before brushing. I find it blasts away a fair bit of gunk... perhaps he could brush for less time after a good water floss session? Or if there are times when he just can't face the toothpaste, at least a good water blast will reduce the amount of stuck food and so plaque, bacteria etc. Can also use them filled with mouthwash or salt water.

Also, I've not tried them yet, but there are many manual & electric tooth cleaning inventions on the market now that claim to dramatically reduce the amount of time you need to brush (so 10-20 seconds of gagging rather than 2 minutes).

I will definitely look in to the things you have suggested.

    Thank you
