Autism assessment preparation

Hello All,

I'm going to be having an ASD assessment next week over Zoom with a Psychiatrist.  Before the assessment, I've had to fill out a lot of questionnaires (which I'm happy to do).

Just wanted to know what your experiences were when you had your ASD assessment.  How did you prepare? What questions did they ask you? Can you give me any advice on how to prepare as am a little nervous. I've been making notes here and there, however, mainly on why I think I might have ASD.

Thank you in advance and best wishes

Ruth

  • Make a list of reasons why u think u are autistic.

include blood relatives in your family who are autistic or adhd or called weird/different

and a list of occasions when u have been called weird, autistic, different

the list should be electronic ie so you can email it to anyone who wants it

The last sentence is important because if u have it in electronic form, the assessors can cut and paste in your sentences directly into their report saving them time. Also if they have your document they wont miss anything when taking notes.

as for the actual assessment,, no, there is no real way, to prepare. Because normally there isn't anything you can do or answer just sitting there.

Just have a couple of drinks ( non-alcoholic :)  ) to sip through the meeting.

dont be afraid if you get nervous or scared    --- they are expecting that. They will be very nice. They are hare to help you in essence.

  • Hello Aidie,

Thanks for your message, greatly appreciated and found it very helpful.  My brother is autistic and I think my mum is autistic but cannot be sure.  I used to be called weird a lot at school and college but am not sure if the rest of my family were called weird. I know that me and my brother were definitely seen as different by a lot of members of our family which is probably what bonds us.

I will make sure that my list is electronic, that's a very good idea as have mainly been writing it down.

Will definitely have a few drinks during the meeting in case my throat gets dry (water of course or juice lol)

I saw that you were diagnosed around 3 years ago, did you find getting a diagnosis helpful if you don't mind me asking?
