Medication for my 17 year old son who is on the autistic spectrum

My son has had a very difficult time with college finishing early this year.  This has therefore Made his  intrusive thoughts about death  very intense and his thoughts won’t leave him alone. This therefore led him  to feeling very depressed .He is seeing a CBT practitioner as well. He started to take setraline for the first seven days and  his mood vastly improved and he had a great cbt session, however soon after  he started to feel really depressed and suicidal . He came off the medication as it wasn’t right for him . I understand this can be a side affect, he would like to try a different medication but at a lower dosage . I wonder if anybody had any suggestions please?

  • It's a really difficult topic to get advice from non-medical folks.
Personally I have been on half a dozen SSRIs and not really got a solution.
Your GP may well be limited to running through their 'pathway' - basically iterating through the approved list of drugs until something works.
A psychiatrist might have more leeway with prescribing choices - if you can get to see one, of course...
