Period Anxiety

Hi, little bit of a tricky subject here.

I was wondering if there’s any other autistic adult women who have period anxiety? I struggle badly with the thought of periods starting when I’m in social situations or when I’m out and about. I am so worried about them that I start to wear period products up to a week before it actually starts (when I predict I will be on) to prevent myself being in embarrassing or stressful situations. I will be obsessive over how many pads or whatever I have available to me immediately and will be on edge all of the time until it actually begins.

Is this a common problem for autistic women or is it just me? How should I deal with it? And is it okay to use products before you’ve actually started that cycle? So anxious about it.

  • Using pads or liners before you start is ok (and quite sensible I think! I wear a pad at least a couple of days before, my first period came out of nowhere on a coach on a very distant school trip!) but tampons are best left until you’ve started. As Bassface says there are lots of absorbant period knickers and reusable cloth pads on the market now if you’re worried about discomfort from a dry pad
