Recent diagnosis

My almost 4 year old son has recently been diagnosed with core autism, im currently struggling to understand what this will mean for him, We have been referred to earlydays and occupational therapy, but im still not really sure where we go now that we have had the disgnosis, the doctor we have seen was really helpful, but im feeling rather confused as to what will happen now. He is currrently in mainstream nursery however im unsure if he will be able to continue there after july as he will be expected to go full time there and im not convinced he will be able to cope with full time school at the moment, any advice would be greatly appreciated! :-)

  • Well our son Stephen has decided that he wants to spend a long weekend at his friends house, his friend is also 18 and quite sensible, but lives about 25 miles away from us, they were at school together and he is a member of Stephen's very small group of friends although he is unaware of Stephen's recent diagnosis.

This is where we have a problem, should we inform Stephen's friend that he is Autustic and have a chat with him about it or should we leave things as they are, we don't want to make Stephen out to be different, we are also concerned with Stephen's safety should they go out and a situation arrise that Stephen is not able to read and react to as a normal 18 year old would, being some distance away and being unable to dictate and control the situation is a real nightmare for us.

  • Our son is now 18 and has only just been confirmed to have a form of autism, we knew from the age of 2 that something wasnt quite right and seeked help throughout his nursery and school life for extra support for him as he also had learning difficulties and his social skills were poor.   Its taken along time but it does mean that we can now get the help he deserves at last.

  • Hello,

i have a son who is 17and the week before his birthday I received a letter from his college to say he had autistic tendencies and that he needed to be seen by a psychologist. I am upset, angry and confused as there has been no suggestion of this before now from any of the schools he has been to, he has just gotten himself a job with no problem and recently I was informed by the college I did not need to attend an open night as there was no problems. Should I while I wait to see the psychologist go to my gp and ask for a second opinion, so wait and see if there is a problem first. I am worried it may affect his ability to cope with his new job and cope with college, but also angry that if he does have these tendenicies could he have had more help and support through out his years at school. Any help or advice appreciated.
