22 month old son awaiting diagnosis and ongoing assessment

My son has been assessed over the past year after a possible seizure/fit.  He is healthy apart from this. They couldn't evidence that it was infact a seizure.  He started crawling and saying a few words after a while then after a while we felt he wasn't progressing, we felt he was going back the way.  He stopped crawling and talking over time.  He didn't start walking till 14 months and babbles rather than saying words.  His eye contact is improving however he prefers playing in a world of his own.  He never sits down just runs from one end of the room to the other all day and when excited waves his arms.  He consistently spins toys and plays with the same over and over.  He is very independent and does not try to get my attention. I feel something's have improved however went to an assessment where the consultant told us he shows features of autism. The family are devastated.  He is very bright and knows words and understands what things are. He is being referred to speech and language therapy and has a formal assessment in a few months. I am finding this new hard to sink in. Anyone have any advice?
