22 month old son awaiting diagnosis and ongoing assessment

My son has been assessed over the past year after a possible seizure/fit.  He is healthy apart from this. They couldn't evidence that it was infact a seizure.  He started crawling and saying a few words after a while then after a while we felt he wasn't progressing, we felt he was going back the way.  He stopped crawling and talking over time.  He didn't start walking till 14 months and babbles rather than saying words.  His eye contact is improving however he prefers playing in a world of his own.  He never sits down just runs from one end of the room to the other all day and when excited waves his arms.  He consistently spins toys and plays with the same over and over.  He is very independent and does not try to get my attention. I feel something's have improved however went to an assessment where the consultant told us he shows features of autism. The family are devastated.  He is very bright and knows words and understands what things are. He is being referred to speech and language therapy and has a formal assessment in a few months. I am finding this new hard to sink in. Anyone have any advice?

  • hi kirkie - welcome to the site.  How old is your son?  Everyone on here will understand how you're feeling.  Even if you're prepared well in advance for a diagnosis of autism it can still have a strong effect when it happens. It takes time to adjust + you can't rush it.  Cut yourself some slack.   One way to adjust is to learn about autism.  Then you'll feel more confident.   Sites like this are a mine of info so check out the home pg + the posts + ask any questions you want.  As you learn how autism affects him as an individual you will be in a better position to help him.  He's still the same little boy.  It can be difficult with family + friends.  Those we trust and rely on sometimes don't react in the way we expect.  Give everyone time to adjust, just as you need to do.  Others will be along soon with posts to help. If/when he gets his diagnosis then that info shd also help you to help him.
