Assistance Dogs

Hello!
As I’m getting older and wanting to become more independent, me and my family have considered getting a service dog, my mum currently is someone who cares for me a lot but I’m starting to feel as though she babys me, and doesn’t let me do anything by myself.
I rarely leave the house for both sensory and anxiety reasons (before COVID, I nearly never leave the house now).
We think getting an assistance dog may help me to become independent and to get me out of the house, as well as help with panic attacks, meltdowns etc.

does anyone have any advice or experiences with assistance dogs or similar?

  • I don’t have a dog or know anyone who does but I sponsor a hearing dog so know a couple of things through the information they send me. (This is assuming you’re from the UK) You’d need to make sure the dog is from a registered organisation for it to be allowed in shops etc https://www.assistancedogs.org.uk/members/

There can also be extremely long waiting lists depending on the demand for the particular type of dog you need. I’ve copied a link above if you haven’t already looked, there are usually FAQs about eligibility and the application process on the websites
