Labels

when i first admitted to myself i am autistic ,it totally knocked me for six [i don't like this phrase but can't think of how to describe it.] everything i thought about that had happened to me had changed, the reasons i reacted were different and the fact that half the people around me are autistic changed why they had done stuff to me .so everything has changed . Reading about things like  Alexithymia and ptsd have changed the way that i look at both myself and events that have happened to me.

I have always known i am different ,and when asked about my children have always said i don't know what normal is ,The way i have always looked at it is people are all different ,some good some bad ,its all a bit blurry really .

What do you do if you don't feel anything ,just go along and do what you think you should ,try to do the right thing .

The point is putting labels on things ,is it good ? ,it's changed the way i think about the past and myself , but it's made me realize how little i now about what is going on around me and how wrong i am when trying to guess .I suppose like a blind person trying to describe a picture  .

  • it's made me realize how little i now about what is going on around me and how wrong i am when trying to guess

    That's how I feel - like a child in an adult's world.

I think getting a label is only useful if the label gives you access to something you need or want.

  • I'm not very good at words ,but i think what i'm saying is do you think that the labels are society trying to get back to something more organized ,when the country was more regulated and structured ,we only labeled the extreme ,know family and religion and class have started eroding ,is the increased us of labels an attempt to provide stucture. That simon cohan baron seems to be saying the same thing , there have always been autism it is just more visible ,i.e. it's society that has  changed not me

  • I believe autism is a lot more prevalent that people think - I meet loads in industry and science areas - we push the world forwards,       We are the classic boffins in the old movies.    Aerospace, motor-racing, computing, electronics - it's all stuffed with aspies.

In the old days, autistics were just part of the fabric of society and in rural areas where the jobs were not complicated they would be just like everyone else - some might be only good at sweeping up - but someone had to do it so everyone had their place.

Modern society is all about communication and social status - it's not a game we play well so we stick out like sore thumbs.

My opinion is that when times were simpler, no-one needed labels - but politics is all about divide and conquer so putting labels on things means you can Venn Diagram everything to conclusion and cut & slice your populations for most power.

  • Drew scares me - he's a shark and he's cheating.    He's soooo like me - he's using his aspie super-power of mega-memory and knowledge database to wipe out the opposition.

Notice none of them make eye-contact with each other - it's all focussed on the item they're discussing.

  • Basically - anything good or interesting. If it is crap and boring - its NT. lol

  • Yeah that that Drew guy is aspie for sure!! There is a dead give-away just in his eyes. I have the same thing in my eyes. Like Packham and Guy Martin. The wayward look! :)

  • Could be - the more niche the service or industry, the more you find aspies.

I'm watching the Salvage Hunters on tv - and it seems the antique industry is full of us!    But then we do like our collections and worlds we can control.....
