Sertreline

So I just got prescribed this for my depression and anxiety.

ive been taking it for two days and feeling some serious nausea side effects do others find the same? Or other side effects?

  • Asking online is not a good idea and actually banned in some forums due to the complexity and risk of gauging one's persons experience vs another.  That said, I will play devils advocate with the pro med crowed and tell you that I ended up with Tinnitus and basically most of the side effects with all of the mood altering drugs.  My daughter also does not do well with most medications like myself.  What works for once can be quite detrimental for another.

The reason you feel sick at first is because any foreign substance such as synthesized chemical solutions are considered poison by the body.  This is especially true of mood altering pharmaceutical drugs/medications.  It is common knowledge that the body gets sick when taking these meds but what is not talked about is why.  Now you know why.

Yes - you can wait till the body loses the fight with the introduction of the newly synthesized chemicals where for a couple of months you may or may not experience the honey moon period.  You will thank your doctor for this new found lease of life, however anywhere from 4 to six months later you may find side effects become more an issue and or the drugs lose affect.  This is why it is important to keep a record for yourself.  Doctors are often praised more than they should be in this respect.  Do not rely solely on one doctor if they are not in tune with your own experiences.  Thankfully there are more doctors these days less prone to push drugs so readily as the community would like.  The taking of antidepressants and like wise anti psychotics has a big fanbase online just as it does in the medical clinics.

Honestly - you will hear more from pro users, but I have no issues going against the grain and recommended that you be the one to educate yourself and most of all learn from you own experience and be aware of the dangers of using others as a reference.  Doctors are overwhelmed in a sea of epidemic and also encouraged by pharmaceuticals to push their drugs.

With that reality check out of the way, YES - if you have not tried the meds before and don't know either way - AND you really think the natural alternatives are not an option for your lifestyle and most of all your circumstances - then by all means try the lessor of two evils which may very well end up giving you more space Vs not.  Go through the initial period of feeling sick which can be up to 6 weeks.  Know why that is happening and also know that you may feel better off for sticking it out for that next period. (The Honeymoon Period) You might get lucky where you don't have to up the does to ward off the side affects and get the happy feeling back.

I've been on this track for many decades and seen it all.  Sadly many people become reliant on pharmaceutical drugs just to get to sleep whilst still feeling depressed.  That's when the doctors tend to chop and change and play with doses until you are happy again.  To me that is not an option.

Thankfully my sensitives have led me to relying on sunshine, walking, healthy eating, talking it out (aka therapy) with an effort to keep a routine.  That's not for everyone this day and age though.  Wearable tech, with sedentary lifestyles + being indoor bound with medications is the preferred thing for most.

You'll work out what's best for you.  Now you know why your getting sick ... stick it out and enjoy the honeymoon while it lasts ... that said - the doctors will keep you on something to take off the edge if need be.

PS - Sertraline initiated my tinnitus. But like I say, I come from a family where those drugs only make us worse.

It's not everyone's cup of tear.  Be your own professional, experiment and don't rely on doctors just because they are doctors.  They are tools in a system to be used.  Be sure you are the one in control.  Lose that - and your destined to join the ranks of gleeful pill poppers.

    All the best!!!

  • Hi Peter, my daughter is on this & it helped her anxiety enormously. Worked quickly for her too. She also had the side effects you mention, but they only lasted a few weeks, so worth persevering with it!

  • Hi Peter, I am on a numbers of medications for anxiety and depression (I have Bipolar) and side effects can be a huge problem, can't they. I have found the same problems with nausea and also just generally feeling awful. Some meds I have given up on because I couldn't tolerate them, but the ones I am on now suit me and have helped me remain pretty stable. I hope you feel better. It's worth checking that you are on a small starting dose, though sometimes even the smallest dose upset me just the same.

I hope your anxiety and depression settles down. I am hoping to access some online courses to try and help my low mood and anxiety at the moment. Have you had much luck with therapy?

  • Hi Peter, i have been perscribed Sertiline before as it helps me with my autsim and anxiety. To be completly honest i was on it for about 15 months, i found that it didnt help me so i ended up on other types of medication. The docotrs at the mediation review agreed with me that it would be best if i didnt have the medication anymore but as they said different people and their bodies act diffrerntly to different medication. My advice would be to stay with the sertraline for at least 3 - 4 months then see how you feel when your taking it also the side affects are common as i had the same side affects its just your body getting used to them !!!!

Hope this helps you out abit !!!
