Stuff that worked for you

Folks,

Any strategies and things that have worked for you that helped you manage your autism or general health better?

Happy to share?

I'll start.

Russ Harris' book "The Happiness Trap Pocketbook" on acceptance commitment therapy. ISBN 1472111826

Recommended by my GP this little 176 page beauty is my go-to in management of general thoughts and feelings. Unhooking from negative ideas, acceptance and experience of emotions (even the uncomfortable ones) and living a values driven life as opposed to a goal based one. Initially I wasn't keen on all the cartoon illustrations but it does make it much easier to review the concepts quickly. I've made a point that I'm going to leaf through it every couple of months to keep the ideas fresh and reinforce the strategies.

Sorry it sounds like a sales pitch. But I've found it really helpful and a huge step up from CBT - which I thought was atrocious.

    - If working, full breaks (don't be rushed for lunch!)

    - Knowing when you're feeling overwhelmed and having an escape plan. I'm rehearsing some scripts to eject myself from conversations that have gone on too long - and reminding myself that just because someone else is happy for the conversation to go on, doesn't mean that I have to.
