my son

hi wonder if anyone can give me some advice, my son has just been diagnosed with high functioning autism, people keep asking what does that mean, is there a meaning to it or is that what it is just called?

  • It means he is very intelligent and finds fools annoying.

  • hi Dee25 -  How old is your son?   There's loads of info on the site about autism in general but also HF autism + asperger's.  Have a look around + also at other posts from parents about HFA.  I noticed your other post wondering why move a child out of mainstream.  There a posts on here as well about that subject so have a look at them as well.  Not every child with autism can cope in mainstream.  Sometimes the support they need is not there, either in part of whole.  Sometimes it is there but other things at school make it difficult, sometimes impossible.  Sometimes it shows up in primary, sometimes later on with the big change to secondary.   Whilst change can certainly be unsettling for anyone, it can at times be more so for someone with autism.  So it's got to be weighed up.  If a child cannot cope + also learn in a mainstream setting then moving them to a school that can cater to their needs is the way to go in my opinion.  It all becomes too stressful otherwise + they will have difficulty progressing.
