Alimemazine to help son sleep./ night terrors

hi all,

my son (8) was having awful night terrors after a incident in his life, so the dr gave him post op' meds, they worked the first night, and he sleeps well now, the problem is he has been on this since april 2012. now if he doesnt have a dose he still wakes with night terrors, as the dr calls them anyway? basicly he wakes suddenly, walks around cnfused (like sleepwalking) then he cries, shivers really bad, often empties his bowels, and then falls right back to sleep, often this episode can last 10 mins or so, he has no memory of it the next day. the dr says ''leave him on it'' but the bottle says ''for children under 8, for post operative relaxation, 3 times a day'' dr told me to give him the full 7.5 ml every night in one go.

i have since taken him back to drs and they said ''keep him on it'' but i am worried, as i have never heard of another child on this for night terrors?

  • hi - this is certainly not my area of expertise, but if I was in your shoes I'd ask the gp for a referral to a sleep clinic/consultant.  You cd say you want to investigat his night terrors in more depth to see if there are different ways to help him.   You cd also check out this medication on reputable internet sites, if you haven't already, to see if that sets your mind at rest or not.  bw
