Aches and pains, could this be Fibromyalgia??

So I was diagnosed with Aspergers last year at 55. I am fairly fit and usually go on my cross-trainer for 40 minutes 4 times a week.

Anyway for years, I have suffered with aching muscles, just like the aches and pains you get with Flu, but basically all the time. It is always the worst first thing in the morning, where I am very stiff and find it hard to straighten up. Going up or down the stairs, my legs ache but I am OK if walking around. I also suffer from Migraines, IBS, fatigue and mild depression (that always comes on about this time of year)

Now around march my ankles and knees were really aching to he point that I saw a GP. He suggested a set of blood tests for testing Arthritis - but they were negative. He just gave me a months supply of Naproxen, which helped, but after the month was up, the aches came back.

I decided to try again a month or two later and this time a different GP when I was having problems sleeping and still suffering from achy muscles. She suggested that I have blood tests for Thyroid function - again negative but no follow up suggestions!!

Now I have read about Fibromyalgia and especially the links to people with Aspergers.

So I tried for a third time with yet another GP today, who simply said it was probably an age related condition and although I exercise, should consider taking up Yoga and buy a Light Box??? !! WTF

I was speechless for about 10 seconds. I didn't suggest Fibromyalgia, but asked whether these symptoms could be linked to Aspergers, to which she said "I don't think so"

Looking on the NHS site, the symptoms of Fibromyalgia are

Widespread pain - ache, burning or stabbing (in my case aching)
Tiredness, fatigue - yep, varies from day to day though
muscle stiffness (yes if I have been sitting still for a while and try to get up for example)
difficulty sleeping
problems with mental processes (known as "fibro-fog"), such as problems with memory and concentration (I don't really suffer from this)
headaches (yes I get Migraines)
irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). (yes especially if I eat brown bread)

I get most of these anyway plus sometimes I get a strange sensation like someone is stabbing me with pin, which causes me to scratch that area of body where the "prickle" was felt - sometimes this stops me from falling asleep.

Most of these symptoms, I attributed to my Aspergers, but I really do wonder if the aches and pains are Fibromyalgia

I wonder if anyone else suffers from the same symptoms?

I'll give it another few weeks, do some more research and try again with the GP but actually suggesting if I suffer from Fibromyalgia

Thanks John

  • Well at long last, I have now been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and soon to start taking Gabapentin (Neurontin). It has been getting worse this year, probably because working from home, I don't move around as much (and no commuting by train + walking).

The whole saga took 5 e consults, before my last GP (the most senior at the Practice) said I have all the symptoms, along with blood tests ruling out other possibilities (it turns out I had three blood tests to do with this?).

Hopefully, the drug will stop be feeling like I have been sleeping on a bed of rocks! :)
