Can the doctor refuse to refer me for aspergers diagnosis?

Hi guys, I went to see the doctor today to speak to him about refering me for an assessment for aspergers, I took along a long list of the traits I have.  The doctor basically took a quick look at the list and then said there wasn't any real help they could give me as the aspergers is not badly affecting my life.  He then also said a lot of the things I wrote down could just be personality traits.  So frustrating.  Also I have spoken to a lot of people and the only people I know who feel like me are the ones with aspergers.  I have read two books on aspergers now "Aspergirls" and "Born on a blue day" and both have large chunks which I feel directly relate to my own experiences.  Lastly I am currently going through diagnosis for my 6 year old daughter and she is exactly like me when I was a child.

Any help

Thanks

  • Legally they can't refuse but many do. The main argument being "why has it just become an issue / you should have adapted by now".

You may also find the same issue as me - there are no services in my area to diagnose adults. if you're a child, there's loads of services and support after. If you're an adult, there's supposedly a woman who can sort everything out for you. Except she can't. And there are no diagnostic services either. They'll do a screening test; but that's it.
