Helping my best friend create a routine.

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice to help my best friend out. He's really struggling at the moment with lockdown because he has to shield so his routine has gone out of the window. He's starting to spiral into a negative mindset and his self care is now pretty non existent.

Professionally, I support teenagers with ASD and mental health needs, but I'd love some advice from people who may have/may have been through similar situations that may be able to help me help him out.

Thanks in advance Slight smile

  • Hi - routines can vary, but a few I’ve tried have involved ...

Set Wake-Up time ... allow half an hour to have a drink(tea/coffee/water or juice)

Exercise ... could be on an exercise bike, or yoga, aerobics, etc with music(headphones) for up to 1 hour(flexible time depending on fitness level, health etc)

    Shower/Bath/Clean teeth

    Breakfast (healthy)

    Hobby Time

    Light Lunch

Afternoons - this can include any housework. Some reading, online socialising, outdoor experiences(when able), gardening(indoor or outdoor), mood boosting activities.

    Dinner

A Movie or gaming OR spend between 15-30 mins on learning a new language, playing an instrument, socialising online, reading(Deciding on a routine should allow for choice, be flexible to the individual and how they’re feeling).

If sleep is an issue, then ensuring no exercise for at least a couple of hours prior to sleep, maybe a relaxing bath before bed, soothing music or youtube/spotify favourites, a good book etc.

Everyone is different, has different interests and needs, so this is only a guideline, and an effort to help :).
