Diagnosis = Frustration :(

Hi, my names Nia. I've recently today made an account. Here's my story...

Since the age of 3 I was diagnosed with ADHD with learning difficulties. I attended a special needs school up until the age of 18. It wasn't until I left school and got my first job I realised something was wrong. I didn't have many friends in shool or around where I lived. I just never fitted in, I much preferred sitting in my room playing on my computer or playing on my playstation. I was never good at social interaction it was something I lacked terribly. Everytime someone would talk to me I would start to panic because I wouldn't know what to say or how to even act in front of them. I also find it really hard to explain how I'm feeling... I'm not sure if this is related to Aspergers?

I went to my GP today to see if I could get a referral to a psychiatrist or phsycogolist but my GP turned me down. Where do I go from here? If someone could give me some information on getting a diagnosis I would be ever so grateful....

  • I am a newly diagnosed aspie and fortunately I had a GP who I was able to convince that it was worthwhile.  I used the guidance on this website to put together a case for this assessment and as I had already undertaken the Cambridge University on-line test and I also used this as part of my evidence.

    Whilst my GP supported my assessment getting the funding was more challenging.  What possibly also helped was that my nineteen year old son was also going through the same process and he needed this for his university application.

    Part of the current problem is that many undiagnosed adults are now discovering and researching this issue themselves and GPs are often on their back foot without the same level of knowledge when they are confronted.

    I shall be on Radio 4 today (1st Dec) on iPM at 17:00 discussing this experience with Jennifer Tracey.  I shall be interested in any feedback! You will also be able to listen to this via i player if you miss it.
