Diagnosis = Frustration :(

Hi, my names Nia. I've recently today made an account. Here's my story...

Since the age of 3 I was diagnosed with ADHD with learning difficulties. I attended a special needs school up until the age of 18. It wasn't until I left school and got my first job I realised something was wrong. I didn't have many friends in shool or around where I lived. I just never fitted in, I much preferred sitting in my room playing on my computer or playing on my playstation. I was never good at social interaction it was something I lacked terribly. Everytime someone would talk to me I would start to panic because I wouldn't know what to say or how to even act in front of them. I also find it really hard to explain how I'm feeling... I'm not sure if this is related to Aspergers?

I went to my GP today to see if I could get a referral to a psychiatrist or phsycogolist but my GP turned me down. Where do I go from here? If someone could give me some information on getting a diagnosis I would be ever so grateful....

  • This is ridulous (not you the situation) - the traits and symptoms you describe certainly align with autism - according to both the autism act and the NICE (national institute for clinical excellence - I think ) guidelines the doctor should a) know enought to realise you are describing symptoms that could indicate autism b) at your request refer you to a specialist.  I would check if the area has a autism team and autism lead and ask for thier advice, try another GP (see if there is a local autism society that can advise on sympathetic GP's or even refer directly to diagnositic service.  Or you could go back to your GP and quote the NICE guideline

    Identification and initial assessment of possible autism

    9.2.1.2 Consider assessment for possible autism when a person has:

    one or more of the following:

    - persistent difficulties in social interaction

    - persistent difficulties in social communication

    - stereotypic (rigid and repetitive) behaviours, resistance to change or restricted interests, and

    one or more of the following:

    - problems in obtaining or sustaining employment or education

    - difficulties in initiating or sustaining social relationships

    - previous or current contact with mental health or learning disability services

    - a history of a neurodevelopmental condition (including learning disabilities and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) or mental disorder.
