medication for anxiety?

Hi

I'm new to the forum. I'm 21 (almost 22!) and I've recently been diagnosed with aspergers, my question is do any people here also have anxiety use medication to help cope with it? What are you perscibed? And does it help?

I posted this under another topic but then realised it will be better in here!

thank you Smile

  • .....I am not sure about a 'solution' but it is obvious that different people are different. Different needs, thoughts and ways of living. For society to accept and understand this would mean happier people everywhere. I am not very optomistic about humans though..... If the government took the lead and educated people that there is not just one single right way to live then that would be a start......

What, pray, is that solution, then, hohner?

  • I live in the land of the monkeys, monkey say, monkey do. I see dead monkeys everywhere, no light of presense or awareness in there eyes. Dumb monkey have a banana in your cage until the light comes on. Then you will have Aspergers. Latin for "I see you, but you do not see me".

I call this golf clubs, every profession works using golf clubs which they swing at problems, there is no original thinking or original methods, just a game of golf. The more money you pay, the more golf clubs and swings you get. And they wonder why nothing really works, because it is a game, which is played over and over, the perpetual system of industrial extraction. Hence you do not get cured off anything, unless the market is saturated,.,, ie the impact levels on society are too high, then the real hidden solutions are unwrapped by the academic industrial government into society. THE SOLUTION TO AUTISM HAS BEEN FOUND, we just ain't getting it because it pays them not to give the solution out into mainstream until it becomes necessary.

  • See my post in the other thread on this subject for my thoughts on the matter...

Jon, I took citalopram for 2 years, thought it help a bit(with the Anxiety), but recent studies have shown that it does not have long-term benefits for Autism.

..sounds about right..... I wonder what 'benefits' the medical profession would like to see from a drug in relation to 'treating' Aspergers?

  • I don't know if such help exists and if it does it will be miles away then I will need to go through the whole funding and waiting list but it makes sense it should exist!!

My doctor says I'm the first person he has ever dealt with that has aspergers which doesn't fill me with confidence that he knows anything of what he is on about and seems intent on medication and telling me there is no cure! but then because me anxiety gets so bad my social worker is limited to how much she can do for me Cry

  • super-meg,

that sounds like a good approach. I think medication only covers up the problems. Nothing is solved. Using them as the sole strategy when dealing with Asperger related problems just implies that the doctor thinks that an Asperger way of thinking and seeing is wrong and that NT thinking is right.

Anxiety and depression are natural responses to certain situations and factors that bother us. It tells us something is wrong and should lead to practical change and hopefully further our undersatnding of ourselves.

So why does my doctor only offer me Citalopram? I guess thats the only tool he has.

  • I finally went to the doctors on Thursday (with my social worker) I'm now refusing medication because I believe the doctor just wants to put me on them and it will all be fine but its not a long term solution so when I came off them again I'd be back to square 1. He told me therapies won't work but I told him what I need is somebody who is aspergers trained that can teach me the coping skills I so clearly need so he is looking into it....

Nt drugs for Autism, that is the current precripting method. Where are the Autism brain function tablets ?

I now refuse to be a lab rat !

  • Just started taking citalopram. Not so happy about it though as it is not really dealing with the factors that cause the depression/anxiety. Frown GP's are so narrow in their thinking. I don't think any of them have much insight into Aspergers.

  • My 14 year old Aspie son started Sertraline a few months ago and it's definitely helped him with his anxiety.  We noticed the difference pretty quickly, as did he, but he also seems more engaged and communicative.  He's own a low dose 75mg.  Hasn't helped with his concentration though which was the main purpose of trying it.  Good luck!

I took Fluoxetine for a couple of years but it didn't really help. I was still me and it didn't change the world. Beta-blockers have been suggested by a Phsychaitrist but I havn't followed it up with my GP yet.

Propranolol Hydrochloride, a beta-blocker has been trialed for autism with some success, so a wider study is being carried out. It works by controlling blood pressure from the heart to brain allowing better connections, it also has been used for PTSD as it lowers the long-term stress memory and helps sleeping patterns. Also musicians, actors, sportsmen(snooker players etc) and surgeons use beta-blockers. The guy who found this chemical was given a nobel prize in medicine in 1988.

So maybe worth a try Smile

  • Got diagnosed with ASPERGERS lately,, spend 4 years on anti-depressants,, Mebeverine(anti-depressant) and Citlopram(anxiety)... they just made me stoic !!!! So I came of the tablets,, doing this was one of the reasons I got diagnosed with Aspergers,, because I made no reponse to the tablets, even at the high level, so it was a determined I had Aspergers, not depression, GAD, OCD, phobia which was there original opinion, althought my condition does express through these line, but not the primary reason, it was AUTISM. Makes sense as I have struggle all my life, althought academically I would be considered very bright, but coping emotionally is hell for me.

I have since read that neuro-chemicals are not any good for Aspergers or even probably Autism long-term. The best research says, just too take a small beta-blocker in the morning. Remember your aspergers is a development condition,, so you can learn new process strategies via cognitive therapies. Don't get caught on the drug route, it is not the magic pill. Good for a mass containment policy system and sedation, not good for living.
