Just got results today - high level communication disorder

My son J has always seemed a bright boy, able to pick up things quickly and follow instructions easily. He speaks very clearly and seems generally very happy. Now he is almost 5 and started school this year. What first brought us to this point is how he interacts with children his own age… J needs structure, clear instructions/goals & logic otherwise he gets frustrated and withdraws from the situation. For example at school when free play is offered and the computers are already taken he is lost. The same happens in the playground, as there is no structure he doesn’t know what to do or who to do it with. The nursery first suggested autism and we followed this up via our GP. After a few dead ends the speech & language people got involved via the school and we have now been given the diagnosis of “high level social communication disorder.” Further support is available and we intend to pursue it, but for now I’d love to hear from anyone who is in the same boat or a little further along the road from us.
