Negative reactions from medical professionals!!

Hi to all,

I would like some advice on some issues we are having with our local health service in relation to diagnosing our two Sons. To get to the point, Our 2nd Son, Who is 4yrs old has been seeing a Paediatrician for just under 2yrs, His speech and language is poor, Is hyper mobile and has other issues relating to social activities and a lack of awareness in dangerous situations ie When approaching roads etc. Both myself and Mum think that he displays Autistic traits and even the speech therapist suggested that as well, Though that said she did not highlight this in her report to the Paediatrician. After a very brief 25 mins with the Paediatrician today, She maintained her stance that our son has global developmental delay. his old pre-School filled out a conners rating which showed him to be a normal child (Not that we thought he had ADHD).

What we have found is that since he finished his speech and language sessions and his speech has improved is that his other issues have been even more highlighted and we are worried that our voices are not being heard, Of course we are not professionals in this field and have to follow the advice of others but we feel so frustrated and have concerns that he may miss out on help if he is wrongly diagnosed. At what age should he be diagnosed with an ASD?

My other son, Who is 8yrs old has recently been singled out at school as having Aspergers traits, Firstly by his teacher who noted unusual and disruptive behaviour, Then the SENCO teacher observed this and called in a Educational Psychologist who feels that he is on the cusp of Aspergers and asked us to speak to our G.P to discuss making him an appointment with a Paediatrician to diagnose him. Well to say we were underwhelmed by our G.P`s response was an understatement, He said that many people lead perfectly normal lives with Aspergers and that we should not label him and that he wanted to speak to the school to determine as to why the school want him to be diagnosed. Overall, Is this normal practice for G.P`s? Is it so hard to want the best for your kid`s with-out excuses?

  • Im so sorry your having such a hard time of it - GP's do seem to vary wildly when it comes to LD... My ds's GP was fantastic and actually fought for us for ds to be assessed so i guess it depends on who you get?

That said its YOUR decision not his re: diagnosis... can you request to see another GP at the surgery?
