dehydration

Is dehydration a common feature in the autistic community as a few days ago I realised I need to take some preventive actions as I getting dangerlously close to making myself ill, I have for 3 years struggled to drink enough fluilds throughout the day especially at work which is resulted in my body filling weak and it was only the other day when my body gave me the wake up call i needed. As i nearly passed out while on shift at work.

At the time it was thought that a short loss of supply of oxgyen to my brain which meant my brain started it shut down process and it was only when I got home went to the loo I realised that I was nearly severtely dehydrated.

So I was wondering if common and what does everyone do to make sure they are getting enough fluids especially if you like me hate water with a passion.

  • Dehydration, rehydration and me are an ongoing and constant battle. I've tried alarms on phone and watch, apps that track consumption, all sorts of things and none of them really helped. I have suffered dehydration to the point where I ended up at my local doctors surgery with a crippling pain in my head so bad I thought I was having an aneurism or something like that.

At one point I bought some larger sized plastic tumblers with the idea that I would fill the tumblers with the daily requirement of water and just work my way through them through out the day but I would still forget that they were there and still forget to drink them. Not to mention not that keen on big plastic tumblers or overly enthused by just water.

Part of the problem is that if I am feeling a little better in myself then I can get a better routine going but if my mental health takes a bit of a nose dive then I just can't keep on top of anything. Plus I only really drink tea, I don't really like any other kinds of drink, I don't like fizzy and I don't like too cold.

In the end there seemed to be an endless stream of making tea > tea going cold > me toddling off to make more tea > till I realise I'd makes 20 cups of tea and still hadn't drunk anything though out the day.

Travel mugs than seemed like a good idea as they were thermal - turns out travel mugs and I are not a good match either. Seeing a theme here? Anyway it turns out the answer to my problem was huge thermal mugs called The Beast, it's made by an American company called Greens Steel, it's 800ml and keeps my tea hot for hours which means I drink it now rather than constantly traipsing off to make more. The same company also make steel water bottle which I can take with me when / if I go out and steel straws that I add a silicone tip to. This set up suits me but it has taken a lot of tile and error to get here and I've spent a lot of money on mugs etc just to take them to the local charity shop. I'm not sure why but I like using the Greens Steel products they are a better fit for me in a way that I never felt with other travel or thermal mugs.

I've included a link to the company so that you can see what they are but you can buy them from retailers in this country, this works for me but I get that it might not be for everyone.
