In the USA the American Psychiatric Associaton want to replace the label Asperger Syndrome or Mild Autism with Social Communication Disorder.

That will come in May 2013 in DSM5.

Does that sound a good idea as Asperger Syndrome is really a Social Communication Disorder.

They should add the word   cronic as no body has perfect social communication all the time.

  • I think they have decided that many people with Asperger Syndrome are not Autistic but just lack social skills.

    On the other hand some people with Asperger Syndrome have siblings fully Autistic in homes.  Most Autistic people have other problems as well.

    The point is more and more research is done and the experts are paid to find the most clinically acurate label.

    Another reason is that many people have not heard of Asperger Syndrome or do not know what it means.   Social Communication Disorder is clearer.
