Semantic pragmatic disorder

Hi,

I have a 3 yr old daughter who displays a few Autistic tendencies mainly in her use of language (wide vocab, parroted speach, slightly monotone, repeated phrases, takes things literally, pronoun reversal). I have just found this term and wondered if anyone has a child diagnosed with this as I feel my childs symptoms seem to fit into this category but I have no idea where to begin to get her diagnosed. It feels so confusing/daunting I want to help her as she seems to be able to learn really well but she learns differently to her peers. I would really appreciate any advice or hear similar experiences.

Many thanks

  • Thanks Crystal, it is good to hear about your experience with your son and that he has progressed well into adulthood. I've done a bit more reading about semantic pragmatic disorder and it sounds like many people believe it to be no different from high functioning autism. I have found a really great children communication charity called ICAN they offer a 30minute free consultation with a speech and language specialist over the phone, so I hope they can shed a bit of light on her behaviour and give me some tips. I have also now written a letter to my GP as I feel it is time to get the ball rolling. My daughter is progressing everyday and I feel encouraged by her ability to learn but I really want to get the help she needs at this young age when her brain is maleable and able to adapt. I appreciate your reply thanks again. Cate x

  • hi Cate - my son's an adult with autism now,  but his speech still shows the traits you mention in your post, altho his vocabulary is much wider than it was + his understanding is better. If you want to pursue semantic pragmatic disorder then perhaps a visit to your gp who cd refer you to a paediatrician or speech therapist.
