My nose runs profusely whenever I eat hot food

This isn't really about Autism but I'm posting it in the "Health and wellbeing" section as it's related to that.

A few years ago after I had an argument with a man he punched my nose and ever since then it's run when I eat anything warm or hot.

I get through a lot of tissues and toilet paper and it's uncomfortable.

I've visited a few GPs about it but they only give me Nometasone spray which doesn't stop it. Does anyone know what other help I can get?

  • Under normal circumstances this is a normal reaction, as when one eats spicy foods the nasal cavity becomes inflammed. However, the way you state it seems like what you exhbit could be rhinorrhea, which simply means excessive fluid secretion from the nose.

The nasal spray your GP provided typically treats hayfever and other allergy symptoms, such as sinusitis. If this did not work, do not continue to use it, as it contains steroid and will damage the lining of the nose.

Speak with your GP about refering you to an ENT specialist in Rhinology, they will assess your condition.

You also mentioned that it was after someone punched your nose. If your nose is crooked, then you should ask the ENT doctor about a condition called 'deviated septum'. This is when the cartillage in the nose is damaged, causing a blockage and build up of fluid.

  • Thank you, that's very helpful. It definitely isn't just about spicy food, I make a lot of soups and recently I haven't added any spice or chilli peppers to them, they're very plain. I get it happening if I eat a baked potato, rice, anything warmed up.

It sounds like I do need to see an ENT specialist as you suggest.

  • I agree with callmebob. I had my nose broken years ago and suffered a similar issue, I was referred to ent specialist as my nose was also still numb after 6 months! I was informed that I had deviated septum and was offered surgery to correct it. I personally didn't have it and after several years and another smack in the nose it calmed down!
