Beginning journey for diagnosis, advice please!

I'm 21 and have suspected for years that I may have a type of autism. From what I have read about autism it is hard to get a definite diagnosis from going to see your GP. I just wondered if anyone could advise me from experience whether it is worth to book an appointment with my GP or suggest a different route to determine whether or not I fall into the spectrum. It's really starting to get to me and effect my life negatively. I have no idea what the stages of diagnosis are or what it consists of, any help or advice would be great! Thanks.

  • hi shopaholic - there are a number of posts on the site about adults seeking diagnosis so I think it would be worth a look.  GPs normally refer people onto secondary services so that's probably where you need to go 1st.  From my limited knowledge I would ask the GP for a referral to a professional who is expert in asd.  There are tales on this site about people who get referred to a professional person, such as a pyschologist or psychiatrist,  but they're not knowledgeable enough about autism.  Causes stress and wastes time.  Good luck with everything.
