Toileting issues

Hi, my 6 year old son has ongoing toileting issues. He is diagnosed with ASD and was late to toilet train (still wears nappy at night). He is dry daytime but has pooing issues and has frequent leaks which is much worse at school. Consequently I go in several times a week (sometimes a day) to clean and change him.He has medication to ensure he should be able to pass poo without difficulty but it is still ongoing. Do I just accept that this is due to autism and will most likely be ongoing or should I be exploring other ways of managing it as I am out of ideas. Does anyone else experience this, if so how do they manage?

  • Glad to know I'm not the only one with toileting issues - I think you'll find it is very common with kids on the spectrum.

    My 9 year old son is still in nappies at night, and with no signs of coming out of them yet!  We saw a specialist about a year ago, who put him on some medication called 'desmopressin'.  However that hasn't worked, and so he's back to night-time nappies.  I just can't cope with a soaking bed every morning - besides, it's embarassing for him too.

    As to soiling, that has been a substantial issue as well.  He seems to get so engrossed in what he is doing, he forgets to go, and by the time he has realised, it's too late (sounds gross I know!)  Try to tune in to the times of day your son usually goes, and maybe ask him as that time approaches, if he hasn't already been of his own accord.  Reward charts on this subject have worked well for us in the past.

    I agree with Yap - your child's school should be dealing with his problems, not expecting you to run in and out all day.  While he is at school, he is their responsibility.  You could just supply enough clean clothes for the day and leave them to it.....

    Regarding the medical side of leaking, it is often the case that if the child is constipated, the liquid part of the faeces squeezes past the solid matter in the bowel, causing soiled underwear.  My son suffered with this for months before being put onto a laxative called 'Movicol' which really helped.  It took a while for him to get used to it (especially as he has issues with flavours etc), but now he takes it every morning without any fuss, because he knows it is good for his tummy.

    Hopefully, as your son gets older, you may well find these issues will right themselves. We have found that, and now lots of things which were a big issue 2 years ago, are hardly worth bothering about now.
