No diagnosis, no assessment available, no support

My son was referred for a PDDAG assessment two years ago (he is now 8 years old) - after much noise from myself and his school SENCO in the last six months, we were finally told a few weeks ago that the PDDAG no longer exists, and was ended in June 2010. So naturally I asked what they will be doing to assess my son for ASD (the GP, paediatrician and mental health worker all agreed he presents with Asperger's symptoms). I was then told they are 'working on something to be announced in April'. Announced, not necessarily commenced... I then asked what support was available for my son (and the rest of the family) in the meantime, to be told that without a diagnosis there wasn't anything we were able to access! Can anyone help me out with what to do next? x

  • Hello Juddergirl

It's just not acceptable for you to be fobbed off like this - and those who have given you the fobbing off are not doing their job properly.  There is information on how to go about getting a diagnosis and what to do when you have problems here:

    http://www.autism.org.uk/About-autism/All-about-diagnosis/Diagnosis-the-process-for-children.aspx

I would be tempted to write an e mail to the Chief Exec of your local Health Trust asking what is the process for a diagnostic assessment of ASD.  They then have to respond in writing and you can use the written response to take things further (eg bringing the matter up with a local Councillor or your MP).

If you need further support, you can ring the NAS helpline 08450 704002

    Good luck
