Puberty

Hi

My 10 year old with HFA and ADHD has been going through a difficult and very, very draining spell of behaviour which it a couple of folk have said may be the beginnings of the puberty hormone changes!  I brushed this off and just put it down to the very difficult time at school early in the year, general lack of support and inclusive attitude and sensory overload resulting in very challenging behaviour early in the year to a consistent stream of very oppositional behaviour.

I have heard it suggested that people with Aspergers are more likely to go through some element of puberty early?  Does anyone know if this is true?

Any thoughts welcome

  • For what little it is worth, since I can't cite sources of evidence, I understand that puberty is occurring earlier across the board - much to do with diet, I think.

  • Your very welcome hun,

I know how it can be a drain on the family, and that can be a strain on you as a parent. I often myself locking myself in the loo for a few minutes to calm down (its the only room with a lock haha)

I find distraction works with Jake when he looses his temper, asking him about an interest he has at the time calms him immensly and it soon passes. Failing thats its isolation, in his bedroom for him to calm down.

I only have Jake to contend with, he has no sibling. I couldnt imagine coping with Jake and others! But do you have a 'Safe' place for your son? Somewhere thats his and only his. I find that with Jake he likes to be alone and adult intervention can make him errupt even more.

I sincerly hope you get the answers you need hun, Good Luck

  • Thanks, it's been a really hard spell for whole family and I have got quite ill at times with the prospect of being unable to cope if it gets worse as he gets older.  He has always been oppositional to some extent too but much more so recently. I think a lot of it is school but he craves the contact with kids that may be friendly to him, which they are for a short time then it crashes and he gets hurt, angry etc...

It just gives you a glimmer of hope that if there is a connection to puberty, it will eventually pass to some extent at least.  The conflict, anger and stress it creates in the house is so draining.

I will ask the Paedatrician when we get an appointment next.

    Thanks for replying

  • I have a 10 yr old lad...I was thinking a few months back he was starting puberty! Temper tantrums like you wouldnt believe, MAJOR growth spurt, he went up 3 sizes in as many months, hes already a big stocky lad! His body has started changing shape etc

He is very unsettled at school and seems more distant than usual. He has always had oppositional behaviours. Hes a tough cookie my boy. He too has ADHD, Dyspraxia and being assessed for Autism.

I spoke to his consultant about it and she said that she wouldnt be suprised if he was starting to hit puberty, although it shouldnt really hit fully for a few year.

I hope you find the cause for peace of mind hun, Take care
