Independent living. Sort of.

Hi. Me again. I seem to have so much to ask and find out about.

Does anyone know whether i can get help with having an extension on house? I live with my parents but was trying to be more independent by getting a bigger room upstairs so i could maybe have a toilet and little bits like a self contained b n b almost but i don't know how to go about it. Shall i ask social worker when i have assessment with her? Or does anyone know who i could approach to see if i can get help with costs or any help in any way at all.?

Thank you. Hope to hear from you soon.

Take care all.

  • While I'm not in a local authority area that takes their disability responsibilities seriously, I did attend a local authority disabled people's forum for a number of years. We had regular presentations from the different sections of the local authority who undertook this kind of work. I recall quite lengthy discussions where people had had alterations made but had difficulties. I know there is a difference in this respect between council housing and privately owned housing or private sector rented accommodation.

There should be a service provided by your local authority, but not necessarily Social Services, it might come under Housing. So it might be a different council if you are in a town, where the town council might provide housing but the county council administers social services.

The best way forward is to ask your local councillor. They are expected to advocate for residents in as much as finding out and putting them in touch with the right department, but they might also be willing to follow through the process with you. Has your local authority a disabled group or a panel reviewing disabled issues?
