Identifying correct emotional support

Hi!

I am currently working with a child who is in year 5 with autism. Now I am new to working with children in the older years as I have only worked with children within the early years.

Now I was wondering if anybody could advise me on how to support my child with identifying emotions (as he appears to struggle with identifying emotions, especially from other friends in his class) He is within a mainstream setting, which is benefitting him a lot! However, I would love if anybody had any tips or stratedgies to support my childs emotional identification!!

  • Though I suffer from expressive speech problems myself, I used to work with others, including children and adults along the autism spectrum. I have a suggestion if you haven't already done this....Create a non verbal chat book. You could make the expression, the student could draw it and you can both talk about what it feels like....you could work out what's the best way of creating this. As a class assignment, for everyone to create a book when words are hard....also you could teach the student certain signals to you and the class to help everyone along.

    Have you worked with a child (or children) on the spectrum before?

    I would suggest that you access some Autism specific professional development training through your employer before embarking on using any therapeutic interventions with a child.
